Slovenian Clubs Koper and Aluminij Exit Europe After Dramatic Thursday Night

FC Koper and NK Aluminij both saw their UEFA Conference League qualifying campaigns come to an end on Thursday evening. Koper suffered an agonizing penalty-shootout defeat to NSÍ Runavík after extra time, while Aluminij were beaten convincingly by Dinamo City in Albania.

Koper’s European Dream Ends in Extra-Time Heartbreak

FC Koper entered the return leg against NSÍ Runavík with a valuable 2-0 lead from the Faroe Islands, but an extraordinary night at Bonifika ended in disappointment for the home side.

Koper had an early opportunity to take full control of the tie, but Leo Rimac missed a penalty in the 26th minute. The visitors capitalized on that miss, scoring through Beinir Nolsøe in the 35th minute. The comeback continued in the 70th minute when Marius Kryger Lindh leveled the aggregate score to 2-2.

The drama peaked in extra time. Substitute Bassirou N’Diaye converted a penalty in the 102nd minute to give Koper the lead on the night, but Michal Przybylski struck for the Faroese side in the 122nd minute to force penalties. In the shootout, NSÍ held their nerve to win 4-3, ending Koper’s European journey in a shocking fashion.

Aluminij Outclassed by Dinamo City in Elbasan

NK Aluminij also ended their European campaign after a difficult away match against Dinamo City. Following a 1-1 draw in the first leg, the Kidričevo side traveled to Elbasan with everything still open, but the Albanian hosts produced a clinical performance.

Dinamo City took the lead in the 24th minute through Lorenco Vila and doubled it just before halftime via Klevi Qefalija. Aluminij struggled to find a way back into the game, and Fabjan Perndreca sealed the 3-0 victory (4-1 on aggregate) in the 77th minute.

Focus Shifts Back to Domestic Duty

Both clubs will now have to regroup and turn their attention back to the Slovenian Prva Liga. While the early eliminations are a significant blow, the experience of competing on the continental stage will serve as a building block for the rest of the season.
