Celje Leave Bratislava with a Positive Result
Slovenian champions NK Celje travelled to Bratislava for a demanding first-leg encounter at Tehelné pole. Slovan Bratislava were expected to make the most of home advantage, but Celje produced a disciplined, confident and determined European performance.
The 1–1 draw leaves the tie completely open ahead of the return leg in Celje. The Slovenian side showed that they can compete with the Slovakian champions and remain within reach of a historic place in the UEFA Champions League league phase.
Slovan Take the Lead
Slovan started the match with greater attacking pressure and took the lead in the 15th minute. Roman Čerepkai finished a move created by Cristian Martínez to put the hosts 1–0 ahead.
Celje responded calmly after conceding. The visitors gradually improved their possession and began to create more opportunities in the final third. Their efforts were rewarded in the 41st minute when Milot Avdyli found the net to level the score.
The equaliser gave Celje fresh confidence, while the teams went into half-time level at 1–1.
Both Teams Push for a Winner
The second half remained intense and competitive. Slovan tried to regain control of the match in front of their home supporters, while Celje stayed organised and looked for opportunities on the counter-attack.
The home side created several dangerous moments, particularly through set pieces and attacks down the flanks. However, Celje’s defence remained focused, and goalkeeper Žan-Luk Leban helped his team withstand the pressure.
Celje also continued to threaten whenever they moved forward. The visitors showed ambition instead of simply defending the draw, but neither side managed to score a decisive second goal.
Everything to Be Decided in Celje
The 1–1 result represents a valuable achievement for NK Celje, especially against a strong Slovan side in Bratislava. The Slovenian champions demonstrated character, defensive organisation and the ability to remain composed in a high-pressure European tie.
The return leg in Celje will now decide which team advances to the UEFA Champions League league phase. With the tie level after the first match, Celje will have the support of their home fans as they attempt to complete a historic European achievement.
